Tell me more about your book!
It was a week you’ll remember for wishing your readers would pester you more.
How much interaction with readers is too much?
Laura E. Kelly on Salon asks, what we hinted at last week: is Amazon’s New Kindle Social Media Feature: Making Authors’ Lives Harder?. Engadget takes a similar view, using the word “pester“. Matthew Ingram on Bloomberg is less sympathetic to authors, looking at the feature from the publisher’s perspective in Amazon Continues to Disintermediate Publishers.
Are you cut out for self-publishing
Cory Doctorow asks Why should anyone care? Marketing a book, self-published or otherwise, is hard work and not everyone is cut out for it, he says.
I firmly believe that there are writers out there today who have valuable insights and native talent that would make them natural successes at marketing their own work. If you are one of those writers – if you have a firm theory that fits available evidence about how to get people to love your work – then by all means, experiment!
Backpacking, anyone?
Friend of the blog Catherine Ryan Howard has published Backpacked and has spent the week talking about the process and the joys on her blog. Including answering the question How much work is self-publishing?
Catherine’s an inspirational self-publisher; I’ve learned plenty from her, myself. I’m a big believer in the inspiration that comes from hearing from others who’ve got to the other side so when you’re done reading Catherine’s insights and advice, check out our series of self-publishing success stories.
Would you like to be Scott Nicholson’s agent?

My “Be Nicholson’s Agent” event in September is designed to reward the people who support me… I am giving away 15 percent of my ebook revenue in a crowdsource promotional experiment, using one book blog to “rep” each book, sharing 5 percent of that book’s income with those blogs.
Scott explains on David Gaughran’s blog how you can share in the revenue from his book sales or at least how you can earn the chance to.
In this corner of the world
I talked about copyright and where to find images for your blog. I also gave you part of the Kindle Publishing Roadmap in a podcast about Kindle royalties.
